When I began eating a whole food diet, smoothies were one of the first foods I experimented with and honestly they tasted pretty horrible. I would throw everything labeled 'healthy' into my blender and simply hope for the best.
Thankfully I've grown since then and understand smoothies don't have to taste repulsive by simply how you use ingredients to mask the less tasteful ingredients.
So how do we do it?
To mask strong distasteful flavours, I rightfully overpower their flavour by using equally as strong ingredients that we know we enjoy. Here in this smoothie I've used banana, dates and cinnamon, which almost tastes like banana bread. From this you'd hardly know the superfood ingredients, spinach, spirulina and maca powder are in there too.
Some other ingredients that are great for flavour masking include: cacao powder, frozen berries, açai, peanut butter or anything that has a strong flavour you enjoy.
The Ballerina's Blend is a smoothie that I 100% rely on for fuelling my body before morning ballet class. It's balanced with a healthy amount of carbs, protein and healthy fats ensuring equal amounts of energy released.
